Automated French Press

Fall 2019

Task:

Design and build a machine that automatically makes and serves french pressed coffee

Challenges: 

  • French press coffee has never been automatically made before

Accomplishments: 

  • Won Best Prototype Award at CMU's Senior Design Expo

  • Was able to brew 16 oz. of coffee in under 5 minutes

Rudimentary circuit

Built circuit and wrote Arduino code. The circuit included components such as:

  • 120V heater that was adapted to function with Arduino

  • Peristaltic water pump 

  • Stepper motor and driver

  • DC & vibrational motors

  • Step down voltage converter

  • Relays and transistors

  • Touchscreen display

  • Resistor & voltage divider
